The Gypsies’ 2016 Indonesia Highlight Reel

2106 started out with a bang! – of fireworks, that is.

We began the year celebrating on Double 6 beach in Bali. With Bintangs in hand and fireworks in the sky, we danced the night away to a DJ playing 70’s tunes. From there we traveled to Flores, three islands east of Bali. We flew to Maumere in the far east and made our way west across the island – stopping to see beautiful beaches, hobbit caves and ethnic villages along the way. It all culminated when we got to see not one, not two, but over 20 Komodo Dragons.

Back in Bali we celebrated my 30th birthday with some of the best friends who came to visit from China.

In March we had the privilege of taking part in Nyepi, the Balinese New Year. Watching the Balinese people parade their Ogoh-Ogoh around the street was one of the most exciting times of our stay!

Freaky Ogoh-Ogoh

Witnessing the sunrise come up over Bali from the top of Mt. Batur was an unforgettable experience.

That same month my mom and step-dad came for a visit. We had a great time showing them around the Island of the Gods and staying in beautiful villas.

In April we volunteered at the Bali Spirit Festival and what an experience that was! To decompress from it all we headed to Burning Island – a Psytrance music festival on Gili Air. Climbing Mt. Rinjani is something we wanted to do when we visited Lombok during our gap year travels, but we weren’t able to for many reasons. After resting up on Gili Air, we did just that and it was incredible! To top off the the trip to Lombok we went down to Kuta (the good Kuta) and did a lot of beach bummin’.

In May Sasha’s mom and two sisters came for a visit. They helped us wrap up our incredible 9-month stay in Bali.

We hope you enjoy this highlight video! Be sure and check our our Indonesia page to help you plan your adventure!
